What is it?

The heart rate calculator estimates your maximum heart rate and defines five training zones using the Karvonen (heart rate reserve) method for more personalised targets.

Formula

Max HR = 220 − Age HR Reserve (HRR) = Max HR − Resting HR Target HR zone = Resting HR + HRR × (intensity%) Zones: Z1 50–60%, Z2 60–70%, Z3 70–80%, Z4 80–90%, Z5 90–100%

Example

35-year-old, resting HR 60 bpm. Max HR = 185. HRR = 125. Zone 3 (70–80%): 60 + 125×0.70 = 147 to 60 + 125×0.80 = 160 bpm.
